Wardrobe 2017

It's wardrobe post time again, yay! I'm wearing mostly sweet lolita and Angelic Pretty is my favorite brand, althought I wear also older sweet style marked by solids. Bodyline makes a good wardrobe filler for running errands or housework, and theres an occasional replica (gasp!) when you just don't feel like risking brand - and there are sadly many such occasions if you wear lolita fashion on daily basis! A cute apron is a must in such a case too. So far I only hoarded clothes for the last four years, but its time for a closet cleaning! I just can't get myself do it x.x Anyway, two years ago, I was pretty wordy about my wardrobe, so this time I chose more of a catalog style format. The links lead to their lolibrary entries, wow! Since Im wiser from the last years wardrobe post fiasco, when I did all over view of the items by categories at last minute bad winter light, I took my photos still in autumn. Talk about being ready! Not pictured separately: petticoats, bloomers, offbrand t-shirts I use under JSKs when lazy.

How I discovered lolita fashion

A tomboy scientist went to a conference.. that's not a start of a bad joke, but beginning of my lolita adventures.

I had no skirts whatsoever, let alone a dress suitable for a formal dinner on a conference. I sat down to google yet another time, exasperated. The dresses I found in shops were mostly elastic tubes or tasteless heaps of fabric. But then, I saw.. a wine dress, well fitted, decently long and with a comfortable A-line cut. The perfect dress popped out between the images.

Little did I know its the often covered Mary Magdalene's Emmelia OP. I went to the shop, called milanoo.com, and looked around. So many beautiful dresses! I spent the evening browsing the site.. but fear not! Before ordering the dress from the well known scammer site I saw earlier, I noticed most of the nice dresses have 'lolita' in the name and went back to google to find more about it.

Forward to two weeks of googling later, a bit of a confusion when stumbling upon the OTT sweet lolita photos, and fumbling around with making a livejournal account, I bought my very first lolita piece. A secondhand Innocent World's Florence OP. The lace was nothing like I had ever seen before, the dress was comfortable but pretty! And I felt pretty too! I was hooked.

In the end, I didn't find a dress for the conference dinner, but I found something more precious. I found beauty and softness I didn't think existed. World of innocent cuteness free of struggle and bland reality of daily existence. I found lolita fashion and for the first time in my life became interested in clothes.

Lolita questionnaire

I found a questionnaire on Sleeping Doll Yuki's blog and decided to answer it ^.^

1. Name 5 things you hate about lolita
Wigs. I got one and I didnt like it. They may look fabulous, but the wig cap was constantly slipping when I tried to put it on, the whole fit was awkward, I couldn't even properly place a headbow on it, I was reaaaaly hot and feared to move to don't displace it on my head. I bet a lot of these would go away with more experience but for me.. never again.

The community. The hate and pressure and girl bitching behind each others backs. Probably happens in any niche hobby.. there are fabulous people but bitches too. In addition, since the community moved from livejournal to facebook a few years ago, I feel like it shattered into many small pieces. It just doesn't feel the same anymore.

Holes in expensive socks. It really sucks to hunt the OTKs in the exact print and colorway to match your brand dress for two years then get a toe hole first time you wear them out!

Hard to wash and iron. The maintenance takes time and effort. Even the clothing that can be washed is delicate so you better wash it in hands and many pieces can't be washed at all. And ironing all those ruffles one by one is an ordeal.. but eventually you'd find wrinkles to smooth out before every wear.

Being afraid about your clothes. The lolita clothing is expensive and delicate.. eventually you'll realize theres a threshold when you turn back not because of the lack of money, but you feel like the piece you love is too expensive to ever wear for fear of getting stains or snags on it and it'd be pity to buy it for it to just sit in your closet.. and even the more fancy pieces you do buy you avoid sitting on benches in park, eating meals which could stain it pernamently even if it would be your favorite strawberry ice-cream, and so on. One of my biggest regrets.

2. Name 5 things you love about lolita
The details. Be it lace, ruffles or just pretty buttons on waistties, they are part of the charm for me.

The layering. Im feeling notoriously cold even in summer. In lolita, I just add a few fancy layers to stay warm and it still looks summery. No more running around in coat during summer!

That its wearable! I can wear what I love and show it to everyone and maybe brighten their day a tiny bit. Where else do you get to wear the art you admire?

That it covers my bum :3 The wide skirts hide the part of my body I'm most conscious about so I feel more comfortable in skirts!

Opaque legwear. I wouldn't have to shave my legs if I didn't feel like it and noone would know, haha!

3. The most favorite brand?
Angelic Pretty!

4. Three most favorite prints including the color?
Dreamy Horoscope JSK in Navy
Misty Sky skirt in Sax
Fancy Box Shoulder Frill JSK in Blue

5. Your lolita inspiration?
Probably Cadney though theres a good dozen of lolitas I admire!

6. Favorite piece of lolita clothing?
Tea party shoes!

7. Unpopular piece of lolita clothing?
Big decorated rings. Fingers of a sweet lolita outfit look empty without them but they just stand in my way.. I'm not used to wearing them.

8. Do you wear wigs?

9. How many petticoats do hold your skirt?
One. Either a daily white A-line petti or a megapoofy pink cupcake Bunny House petti.

10. Your favorite lolita meme

11. Do you follow any lolita blog or youtube?
Yes, a lot of them! Im a bit random though... mostly I read up all I can then move to next blog. Also following a lot of lolita tumblrs.

12. The most favorite substyle?
Sweet lolita =^.^=

13. The hated substyle?
Guro lolita. Eww.

14. Favorite lolita shoes?
Tea parties! They're the best :3

15. Do you wear circle lenses.
No, I couldn't stand anything in my eyes.

16. What do you think of this makeup?

That's taking it too far. Maybe for a convention, but I don't see any way to reasonable use this on a normal lolita meetup or just for a daily wear.
Also known by shortcut IDL, is an international bi-annual event. It takes place on the first Saturday of June to sport summer outfits and the first Saturday of December for the warm winter outfits. The reason it's not on a specific date is so that it falls on a Saturday each time.

IDL was created in 2005 by user kittyhoot on LiveJournal. Sunday was also considered, to coincide with the day Japanese lolitas gather in Tokyo. Sunday is the only day off school in Japan, but in western culture it is a holy day, when a lot of people stay at home or go to churches, while Saturday is their day off, so IDL falls on Saturdays.

The purpose of the IDL is to get a large amount of lolitas dressed up on the same day and go out. To see and be seen.. to come together and draw new people to the fashion, and maybe run into a few other lolitas in the city you didn't know about. To take photos and share them worldwide and build a sense of blooming community.

Happy International Lolita Day!

Headbow: TaoBao

For quite a time I was looking on all the cheap lolita items on chinese shopping portal TaoBao, and I finally decided to do the plunge. TaoBao is basically a chinese ebay, full of smaller shops you can order goods from in China, and also of over a hundred of small lolita fashion makers. Of course, it has a chatch - only domestic shipping, that is in China. To get the goodies abroad you need a shopping service. Someone whom you pay to make the order on your behalf, then collect the items and send them abroad to you. So I read up on TaoBao shopping services reviews and decided to try TaobaoNow. They have an easy to navigate website, 10% service fee and reasonable shipping costs.

I had to decide on the items I'm going to buy. TaoBao uses a chinese symbols, so I used Google's addon to Chrome web browser to automatically translate webpages. Some of the translations are weird though, for example cream or nude color translated as 'generating'. To find the lolita shops on TaoBao, I looked around for lists of TaoBao lolita shops, which are more or less outdated, so I put them together and added whichever other suitable shops I came across and this is the result (to be still improved in future):

My TaoBao lolita shops list

If I wanted to buy all I want, I'd need a small truck for it (and bigger bank account!) so I had to narrow down what I am after. Secondhand dresses are easy to come by, I got stocked on boots from Bodyline and An*Tai*na, and tights and socks can be bought locally or on ebay. What I'm missing badly is decent lolita accessories. Most items in local stores are shiny, glittery, or just wrong color and easthetics for my sweet lolita outfits! Good accessories can be bought secondhand too, but its rare to find more than one I'd want to buy from one seller so I'd have to get them shipped to me one by one from all over the globe. The total shipping cost would be such a waste of money I could use better! It's decided, its accessories time! I ordered 8 items from total 3 TaoBao shops. Here is a part of the order details.

During ordering, you simply copypaste into their form links to items on Taobao and state details (color, size, amount ect.). I wrote exactly what the translator showed for the options, to make sure they understand. At any time you can write comments to your order and any of the items, they reply quickly and politely. They check the availability of the items and invoice you the amount of (item price) + (domestic shipping) + (10% fee). After receiving your payment, they order the items, wait for them to get to their warehouse, check them, pack them all together. weight them and write you what are your shipping options.

One of my items was unavailable by the time they ordered it, bad luck I guess. So in the end my small order of 7 items and 0.24kg was offered 4 ways of shipping, ranging from 10 USD China AirMail Small Parcel to 48 USD EMS. After paying for shipping, they send you the packet and let you know the tracking number. I picked the cheapest, slowest method. It took a few weeks to arrive, but eventually it came!

Every item was packed separately and there were a few cute stickers on the packaging and a few gifts from the shops. One item turned out to be wrong  - the silver double star clip was supposed to be a stars on a string clip. My order comment was correct but they messed up and ordered different variant of the item. Oh well.. not much damage done. They apologized and thats it, I guess. I got the goods I paid for (thought not what I ordered) so even if they wanted to refund me those 1.80 yuan for the item, I'd have to pay shipping of the wrong item back to them, which would be many times more expensive. Can't have both the money and the item.

There is one additional feature on their website worth mentioning -  tracking bars with icons, which allow you to quickly asesss the progress of any item and the whole order as well.

All in all, my order went smoothly. They were quite quick and communicated well, most of the time was spent waiting on the shops to deliver the goods domestically. I ordered 8 items from 3 shops, 1 item was unavailable and 1 they messed up. In the end, I got 2 headbows, 3 hair clips with bows and 7 hair clips with stars, together for 30 USD + 10 USD shipping. Not bad deal, not at all.  Maybe I'll throw the stars string to my next order.

Wardrobe color scheme!

Following on my Wardrobe 2016 post, I thought it would be fun to figure out my color scheme, so I counted the colors of the main pieces in my wardrobe (OPs, JSKs, skirts) and put together this pie chart!

I love colors of the sky, and light, summery colors. It turns out my wardrobe is mostly cream and pink - but not in a boring way! Looking on my wardrobe, there is a lot of different shades. The cream dresses are more classic oriented, with flowers, constellations, and castles, while the pink ones have different shades and textures ranging from Angelic Pretty's plain baby pink through a dusty pink jaquard layer up to old rose Innocent World's classic JSK piece. Standing out is the one red piece, a tartan BtSSB dress, which is a practical, universal piece for whenever I can't decide what to wear.

What are your wardrobe colors?

Carousel prints over the years

Angelic Pretty must really love carousel prints. That's what I kept thinking every time AP released yet another carousel print last few years. How many of them are there even? I decided to check and put the carousels together. They started with a simple applique in 2006. The first big hit was super-popular Sugary Carnival in 2009, re-released in 2011. Twinkle Carnival in 2011 wasn't very popular and AP skipped a carnival print next year. In 2013, Day Dream Carnival was released, and then re-reeleased due to very high demand, followed by Crystal Dream Carnival the year after. The AP kept the pace and even raised it, releasing two carnival prints in 2015 and already one this year. The trend is clear, the print is ever so busier and OTT is the norm as are gold accents... where will it take us next? I bet we'll have one more carnival print this year!

Wardrobe 2016

Another year passed and it is time for a wardrobe post again! Looking back, my wardrobe didn't change so much since the last year's Wardrobe post. I mostly filled up on a few missing items and finally got a proper lolita coat. So this time, I'll focus more on the overall feel of the wardrobe instead of cluttering it with every dress or brand separately. Its time for brand and offbrand to hang side by side! But before we start, lets see how far I got since I started lolita.. this GIF shows the development of my wardrobe <(^.^)>

Lets start with the dresses.. I was thinking I'm definetly a JSK person, until I realized half of my dresses are OPs! It certainly feels like I get more wear of the JSKs though. As this is the longest part, I'll enumerate the dresses from the left to avoid getting you lovelies lost!

1. Soft chiffon Cosmic great for the hottest summer.
2. Comfy cutsew BtSSB OP for home or sleep.
3. Chess Story Marriage d'Amour - if I ever get married I'm going with this dress, its the longest of my dresses as well!
4. My daily Bodyline's floral JSK L510. Its from thick cotton, comfortable and hard to wrinkle, one of the most often worn pieces of my wardrobe.
5. Bouquet Doll OP I wore to the Innocent World Tea Party in Vienna
6. The compulsory red tartan piece perfect for autumn. The material is soft but thick and quite warm, and it has pockets!
7. The dusty pink dress is Innocent World's Florence OP, my first lolita dress ever and as fancy as I dared back then.
8. Another summery piece, AP's Precocious Lady with high waist and dusty white jaquard layer.
9+10. The two baby pink dresses are AP's Dolce OP and Bodyline's sailor collared OP.
11. We're getting darker - the pink and black dress is Dear Celine's chiffon OP, which passes for a normal dinner dress and that counts sometimes.
12. Undiscernable BtSSB's black cutsew OP Cherry Patterned Mesh
13. BtSSB's navy Floral Lace Ruffle JSK, which is made from thick cotton and makes for great winter dress.
14. Summery dress again, it is AP's Dreamy Horoscope JSK in navy, to which I have white barette. Its my most favourite dress and I love to coord the navy with pink, but it looks great with white as well.
15. Sax replica of Milky Planet from DoL.. for when I go somewhere I want to dress sweet but do not want to risk my nice dresses. I bet almost noone outside lolita community can tell the difference anyway, they are all weird clothes for them :]

I'm definetly a dress person, but sometimes one just has to opt for a skirt. I got a few of them for such occasions, but one I really love to wear whenever! Its the left skirt, AP's Wonder Party with a dusty blue color (None of my blues match, aw!). Then there is sax Sugary Planet replica of the same terrible quality, bad printing and stiff cloth like my Milky Planet OP replica. The following Bodyline floral skirt is the skirt which takes most of the beating, simple, unconspicuous and great for chores, as well as the next one, a bit short peachy pink Anna House skirt (yes, my pinks do not match either! x.x).The two Bodyline skirts which follow I actually never wear and I should finally get to sell them. The last is a black HMHM skirt embroided with little stars and bows

Its blouses time! From left again, a Bodyline blouse with just too big peter pan collar, an offbrand blouse I bought damaged for cheap when I was starting lolita and didn't yet fix, then Anna House blouse I wear almost daily. Then follows a long sleeved Bodyline blouse which has the sleeves just a little too short making it great for computer work - no ruffles or lace in way! And A long sleeved Anna House blouse with just those ruffles, but otherwise looking neater than its Bodyline counterpart. The last white blouse is an Angelic Pretty with detachable sleeves and cute stars embroided in its lace - that is a gual achieved from last year, I got a brand blouse, yay! However, the pink Bodyline blouse is the cutest of them all. The two black blouses are Infanta and Bodyline blouse with detachable sleeves, bought simply because I missed a short-sleeved back blouse.

Last year, I wanted to expand my collection of cutsews, and I did it! Cutsews are just so comfortable and easy to wear. From left again, its a stunning sax AP's cutsew going nicely with my sax Wonder Party skirt, then a Bodyline cutsew blouse, AP's cutsew again - I love the neck ties and the little cute lace trims on the sleeves! Then a warm dusty pink BtSSB cutsew, and an offbrand cutsew of amazingly high quality. The last is the old rose long Innocent World cutsew, with the exact color and lace of my Innocent World's Florence OP!

When it gets colder, I add a cardigan to my outfit. All my four cardigans are Bodyline! Turtlenecks are great under JSK in cold weather, or as a top with a skirt and a cute necklace. When it is freezing outside, I take the AP's jacket. Its woolen and seems quite thin, so at first I didn't think I could use it in winter, but with a blouse, JSK and cardigan under it I'm not cold at all! The fur is removable so it makes a nice spring/autumn coat as well. Lighter color would be cuter but I opted for practicality with the coat and got a color which won't get dirty so quickly.

Thats all the big pieces. Now for the smaller items... here is my collection of fancier legwear: 2 printed tights on the left, under them an IW and BtSSB OTKs topped with torchon lace, and a stash of OTKs. The black and pink ones are IW, beside are Metamorphose, to the right is AP. The lower row is offbrand padding of the wardrobe.

On normal days, I would wear just plain colored legwear. To the left are plain colored tights and white OTKs, to the right is my plain socks supply including cute white and pink socks trimmed with lace.

The offwhite Bodyline shoes are as comfy as slippers, I wear them the most. I got also a pair on small heel, but I can't walk in them at all! On the other hand, I love teaparties. I'd have them in every color if I could reason myself into that! An*Tai*na's teaparties are cute, but I really should have gone with Secret Shop instead.. I couldn't tell the difference in look back then. I also have simple gray boots for winter, which are girly enough to wear with a dress but not very lolita on their own. All lolita winter boots I could find have heels, ow!

I stocked up on accessories during the last year. Let me write a little something about a few pieces. At the head accessory photo, the navy headbow comes with the navy BtSSB dress and is my biggest bow I wear. The sax bow comes with AP's Wonder Party skirt and has adorable little golden spoon and fork on the chain. The white AP's Dreamy Horoscope barette is a bit bulky and I didn't figure out yet what to do with it even when I bought it separately from Japan.. it is bigger than I expected.

Here are the other accessories. The adorable pink wristcuffs were handmade by another lolita and have bows with pearl chain you can switch between, pink or offwhite. At the bottom right is a 'I want to try classic' starting package to go with my Innocent World dresses.

Three bags, a cute metallic 'suitcase' to go with my red BtSSB tartan JSK, and a compulsory Bodyline tote I never end up using anyway because I fear something may fall off it.

Petticoats are Bunny House, offbrand, and Bodyline. The pink Bunny House petticoat is a monster, I went for middle poofiness and it doesn't find under my dresses! I guess I'll have to find a way to deflate it.

Some of the random stuff. Parasol is not pictured, as well as bloomers. I also use a lot of thin normal t-shirts under my blouses, normal winter cap and scarf and so on.. not worth picturing. What is lolita is my typical milky brown wig with two ponytails and a brown clip on fringe. I also own exactly one lolita magazine written in japanese which I cant read, and I keep most of the extra bows and waistties I don't use in a separate box, because - did you ever try to sit back against chair with that waistties bow knot in the way? Ow! And for the last, there is a bag where I keep cutesy thingies from tea parties, notes from sellers and other memorabilia.

Thats all! I hope you enjoyed yourself reading through my rant. Here is one final picture overlooking my closet!
